As a father whose children played high school athletics and as President of Marian University, Indianapolis, I have been fortunate to witness the true gift that Bruce Scifres is to the young men who play for him at Roncalli. In them, he instills a deep and abiding respect for that which is most important in life – not trophies or honors, but a rich faith life, a strong character and moral core, and an understanding of their greater vocation to witness love and respect to their families and communities. His coaching philosophy – truly our Christian vocation to discipleship in action – produces extraordinary champions on and off the field, 2014 and 2015 AFCA-NAIA National Coach of the Year and Marian University head football coach Mark Henninger among them. I regard Bruce on many levels as one of the best high school coaches in America, but he is in reality one of the best men in America, a man whose love for God has made him a transformative leader and mentor in the lives of so many of our young people.

“A REAL MAN….As I read through this wonderful book, I found myself not only wanting to meet the author, but wanting all of my sons and my husband to read this book, and then wanting my daughters to read it so that they might understand the expectations they should have in finding a good life partner. It might be ‘Written for men’, but reading it had me in tears, breaking into laughter and evoking a feeling of being cherished. The nuggets of wisdom and clarity are simple yet profound. Written by Coach Bruce Scifres and sprinkled generously with stories from coaching and life, this book is an inspirational guide for building character and living life in a way that glorifies God and celebrates the good and positive to which we are all called. From a female’s perspective, this should be mandatory reading for all males, young and old.”

“While Bruce Scifres was my football coach, I thought he was only teaching me about how to be a better football player. With the perspective of age, I now know he was teaching me about something much more important – what it means to be a man! This book is Coach Scifres’ extremely valuable contribution to the world about what it means to be a man, and his tried and true game-plan for how to become the Real Man the world so desperately needs us to be.”

    :

In a world searching for male role models, Bruce Scifres has written a commendable guide from one Christian man’s perspective of what it means to be a real man. In nine easy to read chapters, Bruce outlines his philosophy of faith and family. Ever the coach at heart, Scifres weaves Biblically rooted truths into anecdotal sport and life illustrations with chapter “overtimes” to highlight his points. “A Real Man” would be the perfect read for any man as he considers what it means to be a husband, father, and son in the eyes of the Creator.

“I highly recommend this book for anyone who is serious about coaching young men to excel not just on the field but also in life. The secret behind this approach is the fact that building Real Men who are prepared for life is simultaneous with making them strong men who are prepared to compete, and strong men make a strong team, which is what Coach Scifres has been building for decades! While I am proud of being on a State Championship team with Coach Scifres, I am more proud of the man he helped me become, because my future parishioners do not need someone who has won a State Championship; they need someone who will be a true Father to them. They need a Real Man.”

“Bruce Scifres believes, ‘There has never been a greater need for the men of this country to step up and be real men.’ In a practical, down-to-earth style, this lifetime coach shares his thoughtful, Christ-centered guide that will inspire men of all ages to become the best husbands, fathers, friends and leaders they are called to be. And he does it with his ultimate goal of leading men to their true destiny: reaching Heaven.”

A holistic understanding of who it is that men are called to be in today’s world seems to get buried in an everyday avalanche of propaganda aimed at demeaning the roles of father, husband, friend, and faithful believer. Bruce Scifres takes on this avalanche with a combination of wisdom and truth built from decades of experience as a husband, educator, and coach. The principles laid out in this book are worthy of consideration by all men who desire to fulfill God’s purpose in their lives.

“Bruce’s book A Real Man meets men where they are at in life – as husbands, fathers, sons, workers and ultimately, as Christians. Men everywhere want to know how to do life and how to do it well. They want to know how to best manage busy lives and juggle the ever increasing responsibilities and demands being placed on them. Bruce’s book truly is ‘A Guide To Becoming The Men Our Wives, Children And God Want Us To Be.’ The aim of the Real Man book and website is to be proactive in bringing men to a place of understanding and equipping them with practical strategies for all aspects of life. I encourage every man to embrace the vision and values of A Real Man and to become actively involved in this life-changing ministry to men! Thanks Bruce!”
